  • Facilitate skill-based tutoring in all levels of English courses offered.
  • Help students master course material by coaching them to independently complete their assignments.
  • Develop and identify resources to tutor students and build writing skills and processes.
  • Keep accurate records of tutoring attendance by course.
  • Utilize excellent communication skills, enabling him/her to relate to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Possess ability to handle a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Support university and department initiatives.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Help students develop short and extended writing responses and various drafts of essays and other writings.
  • Evaluate students to measure skill progression and determine improvement areas.
  • Ensure awareness of the Writing Center’s free services through the website, social media, and digital signage presence.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with tutors to offer engaging workshops and events to further engage students in the AIU community.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly workspace.
  • Arrive early to meet with students at pre-scheduled times.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or experience in English, literature, comparative literature, composition, linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, journalism, education, educational psychology, or instructional psychology.
  • Teaching or tutoring experience.
  • Experience using technology to teach/tutor.
  • The equivalent of the above will also be considered.

  • Develop and implement creative retention strategies to engage students and support student success during their time at AIU.
  • Hire peer tutors, and teaching assistants in coordination with VPAA.
  • Prepare and approve timesheets for all tutors and teaching assistants.
  • Provide training for all tutors and teaching assistants.
  • Plan and provide small group and individualized tutoring.
  • Maintain a working relationship with faculty to provide tutoring assistance to students.
  • Plan, direct, and review the activities and operations of student tutoring and academic advising.
  • Maintain strong communication with tutors, faculty, and other departments regarding the Center programs and services.
  • Identify, plan, market, advertise and execute a series of in-house presentations to provide information and training on the center services.
  • Promote the services of the Student Success Center to the AIU community and share success stories.
  • Proactively identify at-risk students and implement effective mentoring and advisory strategies.
  • Coordinate with VPAA and Deans the advising process and availability of faculty to support academic advising.
  • Coordinate and maintain data on retention and student success.
  • Track and monitor attendance within the Writing Center to ensure effective utilization and identify patterns that may impact student performance.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field desired
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in higher education institutions with experience related to student success.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and SharePoint, with a minimum of 3 years of experience working with these tools.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work nontraditional hours, as necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
